The Federal Communications Commission has approved the Nokia 6708 for release in the U.S.

The novelty uses the traditional candybar design and delivers tri-band 900/1800/1900 MHz GSM/GPRS connectivity. But what makes it different is the fact it is going to be the first UIQ-powered smartphone from the Finnish company, which used to make only S60 handsets before.

The Nokia 6708 runs Symbian v7.0 with UIQ 2.1 interface, which adds pen input to the basic set of features. It is equipped with a large, full-color 208 x 320 pixels TFT screen, 18 MB of flash storage and a mini SD card slot. Other features include built-in Bluetooth, 1.3-megapixel camera and mini USB 1.1 connection port.

The handset weighs a hefty 150 g, but is said to provide 200 minutes of talk time or 275 hours of standby.

At the moment it is not known when the handset will be available or what it will cost.
